Antigua means "ancient" in Spanish after an icon in Seville Cathedral, "Santa Maria de la Antigua" — St. Mary of the Old Cathedral.

Antigua and Barbuda is part of the Leeward Islands and consists of two inhabited main islands, Antigua and Barbuda, and a number of smaller islands and the small uninhabited Redonda island about 50 km west-southwest of Antigua.
