Join Us in Antigua for our 2025 Mission Antigua is one of the 2 major islands that make up the Caribbean nation of Antigua and Barbuda. Ringed with coral reefs, the island is known for its many sandy beaches. Population: 89,000 (2016) Antigua means “ancient” in Spanish after an icon in Seville Cathedral, “Santa Maria de la Antigua” — St. Mary of the Old Cathedral. Antigua is known as the island of 365 beaches, one for each day of the year! Antigua and Barbuda are part of the Leeward Islands and consist of two inhabited main islands, Antigua and Barbuda, and a number of smaller islands including the small uninhabited Redonda island about 50 km westsouthwest of Antigua.
